A low-flying loonie spells a Montreal tourist boom – Montreal

WATCH ABOVE: The weak Canadian dollar is bad news for anyone looking for deals south of the border. But for those who rely on tourism, the plunging loonie is great for their bottom line. Billy Shields reports.

MONTREAL – June was the busiest month for visitors in the city in 20 years, according to Tourisme Montreal.

A major factor is the loonie, which has been under par with the U.S. dollar for more than a year.

“We were impressed by the quality of the restaurants,” said Dorota Anderson, a tourist from New Jersey.

“And the meals weren’t expensive.”

Montreal is on track to enjoy a whopping 4.6 per cent increase in the number of tourists over last year, according to Tourisme Montreal.

A projection of more than 1.2 million visitors are set to come to town in 2015.
